Toke Without The Choke

5 Ways to Smoke Weed Without Coughing Up a Lung

Smoking is a popular method of ingesting cannabis, the most popular actually - according to a 2020 norml article. I’ll admit that even despite my asthma, my bong and I are tight.

But coughing isn’t really a welcomed side effect, so here are 5 tips to toke without the choke.

Quality Buds

Get your hands on some quality buds. This doesn’t necessarily mean pricey - just check for mold or mildew when you can. If you can’t, buy from reputable sources that you know & trust.

Also consider asking about any pesticides used during the grow process.

Cool Your Hit

The hotter the hit, the more choke-inducing it is so find ways to cool it down before getting to your lungs.

Put some distance between you and the cherry (red hot weed) - bongs are clearly best at this. Extra points if the bong can also cool your hit down through ice chambers.

Another great option for a cool, smooth hit is the Chill Steel Pipe - made of stainless steel, it comes apart and fills with ice.

Freezer pipes are great if you’re not into bongs. These hand pipes can be put in the freezer before use.

Try a Perc

Adding a percolator to your bong exposes the smoke to more water & prolongs the distance your hit travels.

Percs come in many different styles so look around and find one you like.

Deep Breathing

Taking deep breaths is helpful for your mental wellbeing but it also helps you avoid some coughing.

After taking your hit, breathe in deeply. Breathing the smoke only into your throat causes irritation.

Try Something Else

I have no plans to part with my bong, and you don’t necessarily have to either.

But there are many ways to consume cannabis - edibles, tinctures, even vaping - are easier on the lungs.

It’s important to note that different ingestion methods can produce different effects so be sure to start low, go slow, and reach out to a cannabis health coach if you’d like more guidance.
